As in my intro post recently purchased a used Kadjar Sig Nav. I've done the update of R-Link to 2.2.19.300 and updated to the 2017.06 maps.
 
I noticed on a recent trip the time and distance estimates while navigating a route? Previous cars sat nav has used the FM radio broadcast traffic information but the information the R-Link was displaying seemed to be much more accurate and up to date than it ever was in those. This seemed pretty real time and was pretty much matching the estimates provided by google maps on the Mrs. iPhone.

Is it using some sort of data/internet connection to get the traffic information and if so does anyone know where it's coming from?

I agree it's surprisingly accurate. Even here in Lithuania. It's called Tom Tom Traffic and gets the info over the inbuilt sim-card, provided there is a valid subscription. You can check how long is left of your subscription in the R-link store. Cars sold from 2017 and onwards have 3 years.

Interesting. Looking in the R-Link store I don't see an active subscription, I can see the options in the catalogue for purchasing 1yr/3yr subscriptions but nothing that suggests an active subscription in my products.

I agree, I have the same as you, no subscription showing. 

Have you both updated to the 2017.6 map? Could it be "included" in the map update?  Or - could my info that this is a sepatate subscription be wrong?!? I can vagelue recall being wrong once before. In the spring of 1973
