Yes, you can move the mirror manually turds the front of the car without any damage to the mirror or motor.
Best advice is to remove the mirror glass, and the mirror cover, and clean and lube the motor axle.( See on YouTube how to remove mirror cover)

I thought that you could get access to the mechanism from the underside of the wing mirror housing, so avoiding taking the glass out.

There is a video on how to remove the cover of the mirror, by hitting it with the palm of your hand.
Please DO NOT do this as it breaks the clips that hold it on.

The correct way is to unclip the glass, then unclip the cover from the inside, saving the clips from snapping.
I might have a video in my YouTube channel of our FB page with me removing the mirror.

ive had a mirror stripped down and there’s really no advantage gained to trying to get to the mechanics of the drive.

Try using a little degreaser in a spray format then a silicon spray. Avoid greasy type lubricants as they soak up dirt and harden off in the winter.

use a straw fed spray tin to get in all areas.
