So. It's the android auto app which is the problem.

My kadjar doesn't have AA built in so I have a phone holder and I use the AA app

To solve the issue I killed the AA app, launched Spotify and voila. Works fine.

I'm yet to test it but for convenience I've set tasker on my phone to launch Spotify when it connects to the car provided this works as expected I'll be happy enough!
