Hello,

Randomly on a journey in London I heard this tapping noise from what seemed like the engine. After opening the bonnet I can confirm its coming from the top of the engine. I have attached the sound clip, it happens when the car is warmed up and I apply the accelerator. If the car is idle and not warm the sound is not there. Around the 18 second mark the noise is heard like a helicopter kind of noise Any?

Any advice would be great.

Check the air filter cover.I had the same problem and solve it with plastic brace.

Thanks for the reply. Turns out it was an internal engine failure (No details provided). Had to have a new engine put in at 39k miles. Couldn't find any similar situations as mine online

Apparently an engine knocking noise can be an advance warning of an impending timing belt failure. I don't know what the maximum mileage or vehicle age is before a timing belt would normally need to be changed.
