Duh, the penny has just dropped, you have a Diesel. Regen is probably what is happening, which is why it doesn't happen on my car being petrol.
If you google renault dpf regeneration you will find multiple references to the process and I think there is also a process to force regen.

Nothing to do with dpf regen.
Fan is thermostatically controlled so it runs when the engine coolant temperature is above a certain temperature. This often happens for a few minutes after the engine has been switched off.
If the fan runs when the engine is cold then I would say that the switch is faulty.

The only Diesel I have is a van which does a lot of mileage in one hit so I do not necessarily have this issue. I can only speak from what I have read and there is a lot of reference to the DPF and Radiator Fan together. make the search dpf regeneration radiator fan in google and you will see the same which I think matches cpl jones query, does it not?

Thanks duracel, I have learn't something new today. However a running on coolant fan is normal, unless the switch is faulty.

Yep totally agree with that part, we are never too old to learn new stuff

sometimes the Air Con fan will continue to run as well, it could be that if the temperature gauge isnt going over norm
