You are quite right, they could be wired out of phase either one to the other or both to source. I don't think this would radically affect to overall sound quality tho, not to the extent that they sounded totally worse. They would just lose image stability.

I suppose the newly fitted speakers have the factory connectors so no cutting and custom mods took place - at least this is what official dealer would do. So with factory connectors there are no two ways to connect - it's either plugged or not. Either makes sound or not. The rest is up to fitting the actual speakers properly.

Is the bass sounding like its far apart and blurry and coming from outside the car? and the vocals sounding like its not coming from the center at certain frequencies?

One thing you can do is pan the speakers left, then right, then center and listen if the bass is cancelling itself out? If it is, it is wired out of phase.

You can also buy a sound phase meter or go to any audio shop to check each individual speaker phase. If the speakers are 2 way speaker with tweeter and mid speakers, you got to make sure they are both in phase for both sides to ensure the crossover frequencies are not cancelled out.

For just a few quid you can get a complete system check CD that tests every frequency, phase and white/pink noise over the whole waveband. If everything is ok it just shows the originals aren't to shabby, which is my actual view.
