Devices, upgraded from SW 2.2.x to 3.3.16.x or even 7.x are not able to have CarPlay even with replaced USB front slot because of lack of PCB for CarPlay on mainboard of R-Link2 device. Period.
just disable settings for CarPlay and should work. It works for me while I have this kind of device fitted.
2016 White 1.6 dCi 4WD BOSE with Premium Techno Pack, Winter Pack, Panoramic glass roof & autodipp mirror and retractable towbar.
Added ambient illumination, few chrome trims,
Replaced R-Link2 V2.2 SW version 9. 0.34.611, enabled Android Auto and CarPlay (change USB slots)

To fix the issue in my Renault Koleos 2018 I changed the console usb port to part number 280239665R once I did the change the power cycling issue was gone and carplay start working with any issue.
