Many times and once again… NO, android auto and carplay works on versions 3.3.16.x and higher.
Carplay works only on devices originaly equiped with version 3.3.16.x (HW ver.1.1) and newer.
If you own a car prior to 06/2017 (I think) equiped with R-Link device HW ver. 1 you have to also replace USB front panel in case you replace device.
2016 White 1.6 dCi 4WD BOSE with Premium Techno Pack, Winter Pack, Panoramic glass roof & autodipp mirror and retractable towbar.
Added ambient illumination, few chrome trims,
Replaced R-Link2 V2.2 SW version 9. 0.34.611, enabled Android Auto and CarPlay (change USB slots)

You can not perform upgrade from version 2.2.17.x by yourself. You can only perform upgrade by yourself from 2.2.18.5x to 2.2.19.300 and then to 3.3.16.980. Authorized service can only perform upgrade from 2.2.17.x
You can try by yourself, well prepare founds to buy new device. In this case you will get latest-the-greatest device with 9.x firmware... and will be lighter for arround 800-1000€ which is price in my country.
