Just had a letter from Renault saying this was going to be done during our next service/visit to the dealer.
Should I refuse?
They would probably do it anyway as we leave the car while it's serviced.

i had the same letter, but mine was done last month at the annual service as a recall, so i dont  know if you can refuse it.

Anyway mines been done and the car drives a lot nicer, stop/start works as it should, it didn't before, urban MPG has dropped by 2 miles per gal average befor service urban 50.7 now 48.8 can't complain 

If it's your car then yes, you can refuse it, but you will get the lecture that it will invalidate the warranty which I think for the engine they could actually win in court. Because of the VW emissions fiasco all are having to revamp the engine management systems. VW were unlucky as it was deemed to cheat emissions, the others, Renault included have claimed it's to protect the engine hence the warranty issue claim.

I can tell you that I was very concerned about this affecting economy but had no choice as mine is on lease. 2 months on and I can say there has been no reduction or increase in fuel usage, just a rortier tone to the exhaust as more gas goes through the EGR valve.
We did however refuse to have it done on our similar aged Clio which we own. They fit a heftier duty EGR valve on the Clio diesel from 66 plte onwards, ours would have been left with increased usage of the old valve as they don't replace it when the mods are done.

PS the clio went in the same day as the Kadjar just for a minor warranty issue, they started the update on the clio without even telling us or having had any letter. I stopped them and it was returned as it went in.

there is no point refusing the update, it has been done for your benefit  come MOT time you will be glad you had it done  

No it hasn't, it's being done to cover Renaults backside, the EGR valves in the Clio have been shown to fail early after this mod hence they had to update them. Kadjars may have had the updated valve from day 1 as obviously the Clio came first. No manufacturer does recalls for other than safety or litigation proofing
