He/She has been messing with the Engine Management System system which you normally need specialist equipment to plug into the car in order to carry this out. Not something that is recommended unless you know what you are doing.

ECU stands for Engine Control Unit

remap a ECU is putting other software into the central chip. Better performance lower consumption. 

Not for me then. I am very pleased with the performance I am already getting. But I can understand someone going for better if they know what they are doing like Dolph clearly does.

I don't know what I'm doing

This is my second remap of my Kadjar. First one, not releated to the remap, ECU fried one day and after having that one change (lucky me Renault couldn't read the ECU) over guarantee I got the second one remapped, but not as much as the first one. This one give me around 125-130 HP and the gear shifting is a bit faster and because of this I have at least 15% better fuel economy. So for now, lucky me. By the way, I no longer have guarantee on the car since it has expired.  

Basically this EDC is manufactured by Getrag and is implemented in other brands too. I know that Scenic II 2.0 16V has an Aisin 6-speed sequential automatic gearbox called Proactive which did as you mentioned; it learned your driving style... 
so it can also EDC has same functionality.

Thanks Robertp. This is all good to know. One thing is for sure. This strange action in the lower gears is definitely helping me to drive "better" and achieve really good fuel averages. 
I cant think that Renault set out to achieve this but that is the outcome. I am getting about 50mpg on a mix of mainly urban plus non urban. I cant wait to take the car on a proper long run.
